Group show "History: a microcosmic perspective"   May 4, 2024 – December 7, 2024

"There is no need to speak. You must only concentrate and recall all your past life. When a man thinks of the past, he becomes kinder – “Stalker”, 1979 / screenplay: Arkady and Boris Strugatsky, dir: Andrei Tarkovsky

World history is written from broad and sweeping perspectives. The places and names, often associated with power and conflicts that span over eras, can abstract the past obscuring its personal relevance to the present. Art can fill this void when it takes on the role of humanizing these events. Definitely, in literature, we see it in the form of storytelling, and in the visual arts, it is also found when artistic output directly correlates with personal experiences of their times.

The history of an individual is as much about cultural legacy as it is about recent family heritage, and viewing Art from this perspective shines a light on our differences on both the global and the personal scale. That we are all in fact unique is what we actually all have in common, and understanding this enables us to see ourselves in the ‘other’ and develop the empathy that is necessary to build a humane and peaceful world."

"Nichos"

  Inherited Souvenirs

15 October - 12 November 2022

Opening Saturday the 15th of October in presence of the artist: 16.00-18.00

Painted in a style which is both hyper realistic and intentionally abstract, Spanish artist Carlos Sagrera’s works are intimate and nuanced. The main subjects in his paintings are interiors, identity, and the mystery of everyday life. Sagrera depicts domestic spaces where time seems to have stood still. These spaces evoke associations and memories of a familiar past, and as a spectator, one might wonder whether they existed in reality or were simply imagined by the artist himself.

For his newest exhibition with Rutger Brandt Gallery, Sagrera has chosen to focus on the concept of the ‘souvenir’. He traces the idea back to its historic roots, the abstract notions of memories and fragments in the mind. He also looks at more tangible modern etymologies referring to objects bought in order to remind oneself of a place, an occasion or a holiday.

Through his evocative paintings, the artist proposes that we can also view the items that dwell in our space, such as furniture, decorative objects, textiles or home appliances, as souvenirs. Sagrera suggests that souvenirs are not limited to physical objects, but they include behaviors and manners that we learn in a space and maintain throughout life.

Sagrera’s paintings imply that the accumulated souvenirs within our private life and domestic surroundings are deeply connected with us. The objects in our personal spaces are the key to opening our memories, traumas, and backgrounds. These objects have been shaped the scenery and context where our most sentimental experiences have occurred. The patina that appears on their surfaces over time is etched with feelings and emotions.

One of my works acquired by Poort -Visser Collection is exhibited in Kunsthal Rotterdam, The Netherlands.

Collecting art can be a life-enhancing experience, especially when you surround yourself with it at
home. This is also demonstrated by the exhibition ‘Home is where the Art is’. At the Kunsthal, the
collectors Johan Poort and Manon Visser will be inviting the public to step into their home, as it
were – the place where they live amidst their joint art collection. Poort and Visser started
collecting art five years ago. Different movements, periods, and both ‘high’ and ‘low’ art all meet
and interact with each other in this diverse and intuitively shaped collection. Abstract works by
Bram Bogart and Rotterdam-based artist Ton van Os alternate with vibrant, figurative art by
people like Marlene Dumas, Yoshitomo Nara, Sungi Mlengeya, Pat Andrea, and Diederick
Kraaijeveld. In an intimate, homely setting the public will be able to discover associative,
unexpected connections between a wide variety of artworks that clearly show Poort and Visser's
love of collecting.

"A Corridor made of silk"
9 Jan-17April
Galerie Jochen Hempel, Leipzig

In 2014 Carlos Sagrera (*1987 Madrid) initially moved to Leipzig for a scholarship. After the end of the scholarship he remains in Leipzig -his admiration for the painters of the generation of the New Leipzig School is great and he feels comfortable in the environment of the Leipzig Cotton Mill. Sometimes, however, he thinks with some melancholy of his Spanish homeland, omnipresent is the memory of his past and that of his family since he made it the subject of his painting.
In 2011 Carlos Sagrera finds photographs from the 1970s in his grandparents‘ Madrid apartment. They are photographs of the grandparents‘ apartment, which would later become one of the most important places of reference for Sagrera himself.
Two years after this find, he photographs the rooms again, trying to orient himself to the camera position of the old photographs. With the death of his grandmother and the sale of the apartment, a third and final series of photographs follows. Emptiness and abandonment dominate.
These photographs become the basis of his paintings. Even when he comes to Leipzig in 2014, he continues to examine the photographs. Turns to the interior, rearranges objects in the rooms, adds others that were never there. His works are like human memory. Interior and remembered spaces merge. There are several versions of many interior situations, just as there are 3 series of photographs. If in one work the focus is on an equipped room, in another it is the vanished everyday life in an abandoned place and on the surface of the color the space begins to dissolve.
In the works for the exhibition „A Corridor made of silk“ Sagrera further turns to questions of human and individual existence in the domestic order. The pandemic of 2020 has us all experiencing accelerated change. #wirbleibenzuhause Much more than usual, this throws you back to those few square meters you inhabit, for which you pay rent, which are usually a place you come back to again and again, but not one you stay in permanently. Architectural elements and spatial proportions, furniture, materials, decorative patterns, objects, souvenirs define our home, embellish it, charge it with meaning and make it a place where we feel safe and comfortable. The current deceleration opens our eyes to the details, makes us question objects with which we live, sometimes for a long time, and explore their historical or family significance.

„It is the less than spectacular, not even quaint, rather ordinary, yet fragile elements inherent in human existence, which, as they pass by, leave not only traces but gaps as well. It is the awareness of loss and the destructive force of time. This might bring to mind Marcel Proust’s À la recherché du temps perdu and the time that seems irrevocably lost. Though Sagrera does not halt the passing of time, he makes it visible through the medium of painting.“1

"Hábito"

“Habit: A way of proceeding or repetition of same or similar  acts, originated by instinctive tendencies, especially ones that are hard to give up”

The interior space keeps the memory of those whom inhabit it alive, however time might transform the rooms at the will or necessity of those residents.

The domestic deterioration that comes from ordinary use leave traces on the furniture, the floors, the walls and the ceiling. The routines and habits from those who occupy the space leave evidence of living.

These patterns or traces appear in the paintings; fluid and incomplete reconstructions of a spaces which are no longer possible to access but through this recreation almost seem tactile. A frozen moment in the slow process of fading memories of places that were once so familiar.

Carlos Sagrera Patterns

https://brandtgallery.com/exhibitions/carlos-sagrera/

Carlos Sagrera on Patterns: ‘In 2012 I found photos of my grandparents house from the 70’s, the images showing the empty rooms of the house they were about to move in to. After they passed away these images motivated me to start a series of paintings based on the rooms I knew so well my entire life.

I decided to take pictures of the spaces from the same angle as those of the 70’s. Comparing these images that spanned a 40-year period made me realize the multi-dimensionality that could serve me in my work. It visualizes how time passes by and leaves it’s traces by means of new arrangements; updating the furniture, changing the patterns of the wallpaper and modernizing the necessities over time. The floorboards showing traces of where furniture once had stood as well as the walls revealing where paintings and shelves used to hang or cabinets had been placed. The peeled paint and small cracks all a result of domestic life that had taken place in these rooms. Even without the presence of human life their behavioral patterns were clearly revealed.

The series paintings I based on these images made me reflect on the passing of time, finding a way to deal with the slowly fading memories of my own childhood.

Up to this day I still use these images but in my recent work I’ve also incorporated pictures of other spaces I’ve lived in or those of friends.

By working with spaces I know intimately I can not only collect the physical information but also incorporate my memories and experiences I’ve had there. The use of photos creates a certain distance between the subject matter and myself yet serve as a catalyst of memories, however selective they may be in the passing of time. This gives me the opportunity to go deeper into the image, highlighting certain elements in a detailed realism, working on the light and color temperature, talking about a vanishing testimony of the past’.

VOLTA 13. BASEL 2017

Basel’s art fair for new international positions, debuted in 2005 as a collaboration between dealers and friends. The aim was to secure a platform for international galleries beyond young art stalwart Liste and market heavyweight Art Basel. Concerns and aspirations of the exhibiting gallerists have been first and foremost since VOLTA‘s inception; in combination with the curatorial mind of Artistic Director Amanda Coulson, eclectic and dynamic presentations with a strong focus on solo presentations find a stage as refined as at the main fair.
